I am a small business owner and community and industry association volunteer for the past 37 years. I've been involved in Republican Party politics since interning with Senator Bob Dole in 1985. I am a leader, who works well with other people, listens and tries to understand and then solve the issues in front of us.
  • Service - I believe in service to others and giving back. Over the years I've served on countless boards and committees in our community. In nearly every instance I ended up chairing the board or serving in a leadership position. In our Industry (Insurance) I served as President of our State Association (KAIA) then went onto the National Board and eventually served as Chairman of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (IIABA). Leadership requires working with all different types of people. I'm ready to lead on day 1 in Topeka.
  • Leadership - Kansas needs leadership at all levels of government. We need people who understand full well how the laws passed, the taxes and regulations imposed and the inability to get things accomplished affect our small businesses, our communities and counties, and ultimately our State's economy and future. I believe I bring that level of understanding and leadership and will work to get things done.
  • Solid Conservative Values - as a husband of 35 years with 4 children, 1 daughter-in-law, 2 sons-in-law and 2 grand children, I am passionate about helping to make Kansas more competitive, more economically vibrant, have the best schools in the country for teaching our future generations educational basics and instructional material (reading, English, math, science, social studies and history). Kansas can and should flourish, but our regulations and taxes seem to get in the way of a lot. We need to downsize government spending at the State level and help people and communities succeed.
Our State Budget, the economy of our state, educational excellence, individual liberties and personal responsibilities.
Mostly my Dad. He was a hard worker, cared deeply about our country and his community, and was a wonderful example for me and all 5 of his kids.
Anything having to do with Abraham Lincoln. I have read and studied him since I first learned to read.
Honesty and Transparency. It's very important that we e open with others about our views and our values as we ask for their votes. We will not always agree, but if we can be open and honest with one another, that should lead to civility and mutual understanding.
I am optimistic, a relationship person and someone who likes to work with others to solve difficult problems.
Listening to the constituents and trying to really understand their views and reasons behind them. It's important to ask a lot of questions and try to learn as much as possible to fully understand the challenges and problems communities, counties, school districts, and voters have.
I hope that my kids and grandkids look up to me the way I look up to my Dad and Mom and grandparents.
President Eisenhower died in 1969. My Mom drove all of us kids to Abilene for the reception of the President's body coming in on the train. I was 4 years old but remember it vaguely and our family still talks about it.
I started mowing lawns when I was about 10 years old. I mowed lawns through high school.
Pretty much anything on Lincoln. I've just always enjoyed learning about his leadership style and incredible fortitude.
Being in a family business has provided ample problems and issues at work, that are often difficult to manage and work through in a non-business relationship. Working in this environment for 37 years has tested my patience and my persistence. But the challenges have all been worth the struggle.
A good working relationship that meets often with leadership so that the legislature can pass what is possible instead of a string of vetos.
Reducing the government spending and becoming more competitive in regards to all types of taxes. We are currently an uncompetitive state which makes recruiting businesses and jobs, which enables growth, to our state. We must become copetitive.
Yes it is. this is how you move things and understand the issues and challenges all around the state. They will be different based on your geography, but to work together you need a relationship that is based on mutual understanding and respect.
Bob Dole. I interned with Senator Dole in Washington D.C. in 1985. He did a lot of great things for our State.
I've mostly heard about the high cost of property taxes from young families and from seniors. It is a detriment to living in Kansas and we must address this.
I don't really have one.
Kansas Chamber, Americans for Prosperity, Kansans for Life,
Ways and Means, Insurance, Commerce, Education, Federal and State Affairs.
It is imperative that all governments be transparent with OUR money and that all government officials, elected or unelected, be held accountable for the jobs they do.
I think it is bad. We live in a Republic. If you don't like what the legislature is doing then vote for someone else or run yourself, but ballot initiatives have not been good in states that have them - in my opinion.
