I am running to represent the residents of Minnesota House District 50B. I am not running to be a lock step vote for my party, to be the voice of any special interests, or to advance any personal agenda. I do not believe my opponent or the Democrats in the legislature have acted in the interests of those they represent. Among their first actions upon obtaining control were voting rights for felons, driver's licenses for non-citizens, and legalized marijuana. Does anyone think those were the highest priorities of their constituents?

They followed up by squandering a $17 billion surplus. Rather than return it to those who paid it, they used it to redistribute wealth. Even worse, rather than seeing it as an opportunity to reduce taxes, they increased spending by 40% in order to prevent a future surplus.

As an attorney, I have spent forty years preventing and resolving problems for my clients. I know that solutions should involve the greatest good for the greatest number and that compromise is often the best road forward. I also know the importance of putting clients' needs above all else. If elected, that is what I intend to do for the residents of Minnesota House District 50B.

My campaign slogan is "A Better Alternative." I might also be considered "A New Alternative" because I am a Republican who is moderate on social issues. I believe in self-determination but not when it infringes on the rights of others.

Bob Gust
  • Our State Government must act to lower taxes and the cost of living. Experience shows that reducing tax rates normally increases tax revenue because, for example, high earners do not relocate to different states to avoid taxes. Equally important, government should not impose mandates driving up the cost of energy and other daily necessities. The desire to tax others to pay for your wants and desires is a recipe for disaster. If something is worth doing, every citizen should be happy to contribute. Our State spending is out of control. Let the taxpayers decide for themselves what is important.
  • The main purpose of government is to protect the people. Law and Order are fundamental to a functioning society. The targeting of police is completely inappropriate and any reduction in force hurts the poorest communities the most. Law and Order means more than just a low crime rate. People want Order, not chaos. Notably, chaos was what brought about some of the worst movements in history. That raises a real question about those who promote policies or decisions that feed the chaos.
  • We must reject the Woke agenda. It's fine if people want to create new sports leagues, restrooms, and dressing rooms for biological men who identify as women, but it is not fine for those men to infringe on the rights of others. Title IX was enacted to promote women's athletics and the Woke agenda is now killing it. The original argument in favor of things like gay marriage was that everyone should be allowed to live as they see fit. That was fine. Now, however, many of those same voices demand that everyone else conform to their ideologies. Self determination is a right that belongs to all.
We need to resist illegal immigration. Frankly, we have too many people already and should not encourage immigration from anywhere -- including neighboring states.

Our legislature debated making Minnesota a sanctuary state and might have done so if it was not an election year. That is one of the dumbest ideas ever. We have had foreign students who are presumably here on student visas chanting "Death to America." If those seemingly vetted individuals are virulently anti-American, what can we expect from those coming in illegally?

There is no question that many Mexicans and other Latinos are hard working and help the economy. That means we should find ways for them to come in legally, not allow entry illegally.
My hero has always been my Dad. He basically raised himself and became successful both in business and in the community. He provided for all our needs but spent little time lecturing us on how to live.
"Parliament of Whores" by P.J. O'Rourke is a humorous book that I enjoyed because it was amusing and because it was largely in line with my philosophies.
Empathy. Many people think empathy is synonymous with sympathy, but it is not. Sympathy is feeling bad for someone's plight. Empathy is being able to see things from their perspective. Government actions generally always involve trade-offs and effective leaders recognize those trade-offs and seek to do the most good while doing the least harm.
Forty years of representing businesses and business people has given me perspective on how to prevent and resolve problems. Being an attorney also teaches that you put your client's interests above all else -- including your own.
Represent your constituents above all else. While it would be rare to have unanimous agreement among your constituents, an elected official needs to be guided by the principle of "the greatest good for the greatest number."
I want everyone in my District to think positively about me. Even if I act in a way that is contrary to their desires, I want them to understand that I considered their perspective before making the decision.
JFK's assassination. I was three and I barely remember it. We had gotten a new Hi-fi and I remember it being on the radio. The next events were Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. Three sad days in American history.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. It's probably my favorite because I read it at a relatively young age after my older brother talked it up. I admired Jack Nicholson's character, R.P. McMurphy, for his iconoclastic nature. While not from the movie, I later put a sign on my office wall that says: "Challenge Assumptions; Question Authority; Defy Convention." McMurphy did all of those things and was generally proven right.
Lost Stars from the movie Begin Again.
We have separation of powers for a reason. Our governor has acted as a rubber stamp for the Democratically-controlled legislature.
Improving the quality of life for its citizens. Costs and crime have been going up for years. The more the state government acts, the worse things get.
It can be good or bad. We have way too many career politicians who have stopped carrying about the priorities of their constituents.
It is very unfortunate that party-line voting has become so common. Rural representatives should have more in common with rural representatives of the other party than they do with urban representatives of their own party. Instead, there seems to be an "I'll vote for your stuff if you vote for mine" mentality.
Hubert Humphrey. He was not a member of my party but I think he tried to represent all Minnesotans.
The legislature needs to have some oversight ability. The decisions in an emergency properly come from the governor, but that does not extend indefinitely.
As a freshman, I would think it presumptuous to immediately start introducing bills.
Finance, commerce, taxation
Minnesota's recent lack of accountability and financial transparency is well known. If the media is not going to demand it, the voters must do so.
Representatives who actually represent their constituents are superior to state ballot initiatives.
