A Bodega Bay Fire Protection District Parcel Tax, Measure A ballot question was on the April 8, 2014 election ballot for voters in the Bodega Bay Fire Protection District in Sonoma County, California, where it was handily defeated.
If approved, Measure A would have authorized the district to impose an annual parcel tax of $50 per unit on district taxpayers. The district tax was last raised in 2003. If Measure A had been approved, a single family home would have paid an estimated $200 more per year in taxes.[1]

Ballot question
The question on the ballot:
Shall Ordinance No. 2013/14-l of the Bodega Bay Fire Protection District authorizing the District to impose and levy a new special tax having a maximum rate of $50.00 per unit of risk and increasing the District's appropriations limit to permit spending of the revenue raised by the new special tax be approved?[2][3] |
Support
Measure A proponents urged voters to approve the new tax because the fire district needed the revenue. Some claimed that with the rejection of Measure A, the district would have to fire up to a third of its staff, relying on volunteers with unreliable availability. Proponents also called the tax a safety net and implied that it would hold the district above water while it sought different revenue sources.[1]
Opposition
Those who spoke out in opposition to Measure A argued that the district was situated in such a way that it serviced more areas outside the district than inside. Opponents claimed that 70 percent of those receiving district services did not pay district taxes and that the district taxpayers should not have to suffer an increase in taxes to pay for the fire safety services of neighboring communities that do not pay taxes to the Bodega Bay Fire District.[1]
