What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | 1. Equitable education for all students. Provide programs to develop well rounded students. 2. Parent & teacher voice in decision making. |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | To ensure that every student has an equitable opportunity for a quality education to reach their full potential. Parents and teachers know students best and should have a voice in the policy making decision process. There must also be transparency in all decisions made and budgeting. I am passionate about these issues because every student deserves the best education and support so they can reach their potential.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

” |
Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Bonnie Bourgeous answered the following:
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
“ | I am a veteran teacher and have served on numerous local, state and national education committees and received local, state and national awards for teaching. I understand educational needs of children and teachers and will fight to ensure those needs are met. I am passionate about education and have the problem solving skills to increase the effectiveness of the district and improve learning for all children.[4] | ” |
“ | The primary job of the school board is to serve as the voice of the for students, constituents and educators and ensure that policy is in the best interest of students. Board members must not be beholding to any individual or association and be the checks and balances of district administration. The board must allow for parent and teacher input on make sure all policy is properly vetted and data is considered before decisions are made.[4] | ” |
“ | Parents know their students and need to have a voice in district decision making. I will provide parents and teachers with the opportunity to voice their concerns and value their input on district decisions. I have a blog site that I will update parents on current board action items and allow time for proper vetting of all policies. Parent and teacher surveys will be used to provide data for decisions. I will respond to emails in a timely manner to provide feedback to inquiries and concerns.[4] | ” |
“ | Diversity in any system, provides for greater strength and understanding. Diversity in Davis County is not representative of state demographics and greater diversity and tolerance should be a priority. I will definitely encourage wider recruitment spectrum, but hiring will be based on qualifications. The individual that best meets the needs of students should be hired.[4] | ” |
“ | Safety first. Learning cannot take place when students or teachers feel unsafe. Basic needs for emotional and physical safety must be met before higher level thinking can take place. Intervening early in red flag issues is the proven deterrent to school violence. Having trained social workers, counselors and resource officers in place to address issues provides a safer learning environment for everyone.
Buildings must be secured on exterior doors during the school day and require entrance only through the main entrance to prevent intruders from entering the building. Resource officers[4] |
” |
“ | Teachers and students face many challenges in today's classroom that have not existed in the past. Providing a safe (both emotional and physical) learning environment is key to meeting the emotional needs of all involved in education.
SEL or Social Emotional Learning should be part of all curriculum, strategic plans, staffing, professional learning and budgets. SEL shapes partnerships between the District and community members highlighting engagement, trust and collaboration. Teaching and providing Social and Emotional support focuses on five areas: Self Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. These tools will help teachers and students better cope with the stresses of school. Establishing a community of trust and collaboration will provide support for teachers to feel appreciated and valued reducing many stresses associated with teaching. School counselors are an excellent asset for students and faculty, but their are times when a deeper issue / red flag needs to be addressed. Trained social workers should be called in to assist in helping students / teachers talk through and resolve issues outside the scope of a school counselor.[4] |
” |
“ | We live in a global technological savvy world and need to address the technology needs of tomorrow in the classroom. Implementing technology into the classroom is no longer an option, but the teacher still is the main source for guidance and information in the educational experience. Teachers need proper professional development to implement technology into the classroom Technology should be used to implement differentiation into the classroom and meet needs of individual students and learning styles.[4] | ” |

“ | What is your political philosophy?
I am running for Davis County School Board to serve the constituents of District 6 and all students in Davis District to ensure an inclusive and equitable education for every student. I will seek input from parents, teachers and all stakeholders to make informed decisions to benefit all students. I will promote faculty and teacher well being and improve teacher salaries. Is there anything you would like to add? The purpose of the school board is to be the checks and balances of the school district. As the only elected officials in the school district it is the school boards responsibility to ensure constituents have a voice in district decision making. I am not beholding to or affiliated with any association or individuals. I will ensure proper vetting of district policy and budgets and that all decisions are in the best interest of students. [4] |
