Campaign themes

2016

Budyach's campaign website listed the following themes for 2016:

Bonnie believes that LESS government intervention is BEST! Too often, we over-legislate business owners and individuals to our own detriment. Bonnie commends our police officers for the excellent job that they do. Bonnie promises to spend the city's money, YOUR money, the same way she spends her own, frugally. Bonnie is a proud supporter of Dave Ramsey and has applied his financial strategies to her own life. She will apply the same mindset when managing the city's money. Debt is not okay. Spending money just for the sake of spending it is not okay.

Traffic
Baton Rouge traffic is obviously a problem. Relocating the Washington Street exit is a great step in the right direction. We also need to work to better synchronize traffic lights and to work on the flooding issues on both Coursey and Sherwood Forest. We don't need to pump more money into CATS, and we don't need a tram or gondola system. I'm not against public transportation, but if we can't effectively manage what we already have, we shouldn't build something new. I promise to use your tax dollars wisely, not on pipe dreams.

I'm not an expert on how to fix the city's traffic problems, and I certainly won't claim to be one. What I will promise you is that I'm willing to listen to any and all ideas about how to fix our traffic problem.

Crime
After reviewing crime data from 2015 for Police District 3, the district in which most of Metro Council District 11 falls, I can tell you that crime in the following categories has decreased: Homicide, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny, Motor Theft, and Arson. Our police department does an excellent job, and they should be commended for the hard work that they do keeping our community safe.

Obviously, even one homicide or one robbery is one too many. I vow to work with our police departments to make sure that they are fully supported and funded so that they can continue to do a great job.

Education
As a mother with three wonderful children, education is an important issue to my family and me. I am a strong proponent of our public school system, but fully understand that it doesn't meet the needs of all families in Baton Rouge. I vow to listen to your concerns so that we can continue to improve our school system.

Marijuana
Although the legalization of marijuana is a state issue and not a city issue, we can still decriminalize marijuana at the city level. New Orleans' city council and mayor have already made this happen. We need to stop imprisoning our young people for possession of a small amount of a plant. Our prisons have become money-making industries in a lot of cases and many are filled to capacity. [2]
