Candidate Connection

Boris Abadzhyan completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Abadzhyan's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Affordable Healthcare and Senior Care, Public Education and Climate and the Environment.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Affordable Healthcare, Senior Care, Public Education, Living Wage, Small and Medium Businesses, Unionized Labor, Infrastructure Improvement, Veterans Issues, Immigration, Women's Rights, Reproductive Rights, and Climate and the Environment.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I live by my own examples and believe in the greater good of our nation the United States of America.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Boris Abadzhyan puts our families first, not wealthy special interest groups, because money in politics has a huge impact on our entire community. Unlimited campaign contributions and lobbyist gifts are bad for the State of Missouri, bad for the 71st District and bad for our families.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Being born in the Republic of Armenia (Eastern Europe) and growing up here in the United States of America, gives me the leverage to better understand and see both sides of the world. Thus giving me an opportunity to unify our amazing multiculturalism not only within the State of Missouri, but also throughout our entire nation.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Working very hard to fight and defend the rights of your constituents, district, state and nation. Also, work and find common language with both sides of the isle (Democrats and Republicans) to preserve the foundations of our democratic principles.

What legacy would you like to leave?

Unifying my amazing state, nation and people.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

Being born at the most volatile period of the 20th century, and geographically perhaps in the most happening area of the world, I have been, since childhood, exposed to politically heightened and intense environment. I was born in Soviet Armenia, two years prior to the collapse of the Berlin Wall and four years prior to the small Armenia gaining its much sought after independence. I have lived and witnessed the birth of newly formed democratic nations throughout Central and Eastern Europe and the end of the cold war era.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Washington University, Saint Louis, Missouri (3 years and 4 months)

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Fourth of July. Because it's the birth of our nations democracy.

What is your favorite book? Why?

America Back On Track, by Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Because many of these key issues are what our politicians are still clashing about today.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Leaving my family, friends and loved ones back in the Republic of Armenia and starting a new life in the United States of America.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

I believe that as a politician you must have knowledge of domestic, national and international politics.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Building a stronger economy and creating more jobs for the State of Missouri.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

Mutual trust, respect and understanding.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Yes, because by working together you can make a huge difference for our society.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

Yes, I'm open to running for U.S. Congress, Governor and other positions that serve the best interests of my state, nation and especially Americans.

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

Americans need honest, caring and hardworking politicians that will work for the people and not go after the big money. We must put end to poverty and create more jobs to stimulate our economy.
