Boyce Ficklen Martin Jr. was a federal judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. He joined the court in 1979 after a nomination from Jimmy Carter. At the time of his nomination he was a judge for the Kentucky Court of Appeals. He retired from his post on the Sixth Circuit in 2013. Judge Martin died on June 1, 2016.[1]

Early life and education

Martin graduated from Davidson College with his bachelor's degree in 1957 and from the University of Virginia School of Law with his J.D. in 1963.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Sixth Circuit

Martin was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit by President Jimmy Carter on June 5, 1979 to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Martin was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 25, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on September 26, 1979. Martin served as the chief judge of the court from 1996 to 2003. He retired from the court on August 16, 2013. He died on June 1, 2016. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Amul Thapar.[1]
