Brad Buck was the Director of Education in Iowa from August 30, 2013 to June 30, 2015.[1] Buck resigned in 2015 order to become the superintendent of the Cedar Rapids school district.[2]

Previously, Buck was a rural school superintendent with a background in administration and teaching science.[3]

Buck is a former science teacher, school administrator and superintendent. From July 2011 until his appointment as Iowa's state education director, he served as superintendent of the Saydel school district in rural Polk County. He previously held the title of president of School Administrators of Iowa.

His career as an educator began in 1992 when he took a job teaching science at Parkview Middle School, located in Ankeny, Iowa. He remained in this position for five years before becoming a school administrator for Waukee, Hudson and North Mahaska districts. In 2011, he was made Saydel school district superintendent.[4]

Buck began serving as Iowa Director of Education on August 30, 2013. He resigned on June 30, 2015, in order to accept a higher paying position as the superintendent of the Cedar Rapids school district.[2]

The director is responsible for providing leadership for the Department of Education. The director also serves as the executive officer of the State Board of Education.

Governor Terry Branstad (R) appointed Buck director of education on August 30, 2015, to replace Duane Magee, who had been serving in an interim capacity since former director Jason Glass resigned to become superintendent of the Eagle County School District.[5][1]
