I retired from a 34 year public school teaching position in June of 2023 and am seeking a way to extend a life of service. I also coached a very large and successful debate team, which instilled in me the understanding that effective communications regarding controversial issues requires us to first listen, then think, and finally to speak. I am hoping to restore legitimate debate and accountability that does not truly exist within any supermajority such as those that currently exist in the Ohio legislature.
  • Public education is near and dear to my heart. I have experienced first hand the impact that inappropriate funding mechanisms have on students, staff, and the communities they serve.
  • Targeting of those who may not conform to a party's declared norms is a very easy, and too often effective, means of maintaining political control. It is also anathema to a democracy that should serve all citizens.
  • One party rule, as it exists in the Ohio legislature is the intentional result of jerrymandering and results in the absence of checks and balances necessary for government accountability.
A thriving society requires full and truly equal access to quality public education, healthcare, housing, and employment. Legislation that restricts through prohibition, discrimination, or inadequate funding (including diversion of public funds to private enterprise and unfunded mandates) must be repealed and replaced.
The ability to acknowledge our own fallibility and limitations as individuals and to seek out alternative world views that might inform our own. We must not only accept that others differ from us, but must also make meaningful use the opportunities that those differences offer.
The earliest historical event I can remember was the closing of the war in Viet Nam. I was a preteen when I watched on television the coffins coming off of planes and a helicopter being pushed off a ship to make room for evacuees. I also remember the killing of students at Kent State University on May 4, 1970. I also recall watching the moon landing. These were the political lows and highs of my early youth.
Throughout high school and college, I held many part time positions (often two or three at a time). Those included food service, farm help, factory labor, and tutoring. Since graduating college, I have had one primary job. I taught high school English and coached the schools debate team. I retired this past June after 34 years.
The Constitution sets forth the balance of powers. This requires that no branch of government should be capable of arbitrarily superseding the authority of another. This is why I am most concerned with the supermajority in both chambers of our state legislature. With unfettered veto power (requiring no input or vote from a second party), an override vote is practically pro forma.
Surviving and then rebounding from the pandemic of political polarization and vitriol that divides the people will be necessary for any meaningful healing and progress.
Compromise is the result of diversity of thought, which is a prerequisite of critical thinking. None of us has a truly comprehensive world view or understanding of all of the intended and unintended consequences of policy decisions.
