Campaign themes
2016
Montano's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
“ |
Jobs and Economy: As a State Representative, I will always advocate and vote to cut taxes and keep government out of the private sector. The best way for Alaska to grow and prosper is for the State Legislature to combat the Federal government in their overreach of business regulation. This gives business the opportunity to create new industry and allows them to build a robust economy providing more jobs to citizens. Eliminate Property Taxes: Our State Constitution needs to create an amendment that abolishes property taxes and adopt a consumption tax. We need a tax code that is consistent with Liberty. State Budget: We are spending too much at the state level. As a State Representative I would advocate that each state department take a ten percent budget cut in order to shrink government spending. I will always advocate for fiscal responsibility and good stewardship of the Peoples money. Education: I believe that education is one of the biggest blessings we can give to our children. Education is what makes dreams come true and gives every child hope for a bright a radiant future. However, I do not agree with the federal mandate of common core. I do believe that class curriculum should be up to the State, local communities, and parents. Parents have the Right to choose what their kids are being exposed to, not the federal government. Public Safety: Citizens have lost trust in those who uphold the law. Police departments across Alaska must implement "service" back into policing. Currently, 64% of those incarcerated by the Department of Corrections are non-violent offenders. Consequently, by rewriting our criminal justice code to minimize the incarceration rate for those who are not a threat to the community, could save as much as a hundred million dollars each year. Moreover, it would not destroy families and would allow those making poor decision to keep their jobs, support their family, and enroll in a mandatory after work program to instill better decision making skills.[1] |
