Breitbart News was founded in 2007 by Andrew Breitbart as a conservative news and opinion website. However, Breitbart stated regarding the mission of the site: "If a Republican says something crazy, if a Democrat says something crazy, I'll put it up and let people decide. There aren't many sites where you can see both sides duking it out. That would be ideal for me."[1][2][3] As of August 2025, Breitbart's website said its goal was "to report the truth – accurately and fairly; to speak truth to power; and in so doing, to expose corruption and abuses of power."[4]

History

Breitbart News was founded by the late Andrew Breitbart, who was a conservative blogger in the online and media sphere. He stepped into the media field as a researcher for Ariana Huffington in 1997, later returning to help her establish her online website, HuffingtonPost.com, in 2007. He worked closely with Matt Drudge, founder of The Drudge Report, often featuring Drudge articles on Breitbart.com. During his life, Breitbart functioned as both the chairman and CEO of Breitbart News Network, LLC. He died in 2012, but his website continued on after his death, due to the efforts of family, several friends, and colleagues.[5][6] According to its website, the goal of Breitbart News was founded on the following principles:[7]

The free and open exchange of ideas is essential to maintaining a robust and healthy republic in America and to promoting freedom and liberty in the world.

Freedom flourishes with more voices, not fewer.[8]

News reporting

As of August 2025, Breitbart News' website said the following about its reporting:[4]

BNN’s goals are to report the truth – accurately and fairly; to speak truth to power; and in so doing, to expose corruption and abuses of power.

The following editorial policies and guidelines are intended to further these goals:

1. BNN reporting must be verified and fact-checked.

2. In the rare event of a reporting error, BNN will quickly, clearly, and prominently make corrections, clarifications, updates, and editor’s notes as the specific circumstances dictate, and in extreme cases, may take down the reporting.

3. BNN reporting will endeavor to provide as much information about its sources as journalistically possible; however, there will be times when BNN will grant confidentiality and/or anonymity to sources in order to be able to report important information to the public.

4. All BNN reporters and editors should assiduously avoid not only actual or potential conflicts of interest, but also any appearance of conflicts of interest.

5. When seeking interviews, BNN reporters will accurately identify themselves.

6. BNN labels opinion pieces as such and/or with the following headline format: “Author’s Name: Headline.”[8]

Alleged altercation between Breitbart reporter and Trump campaign manager

Former Breitbart News editor at large Ben Shapiro resigned in 2016 after an alleged assault on Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields by Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign manager Corey Lewandowski. Fields also resigned from her post at Breitbart News at the same time. Shapiro stated, "Both Lewandowski and Trump maligned Michelle in the most repulsive fashion. Meanwhile, Breitbart News not only stood by and did nothing outside of tepidly asking for an apology, they then attempted to abandon Michelle by silencing staff from tweeting or talking about the issue."[9]

Shapiro also said, "Andrew’s life mission has been betrayed. Indeed, Breitbart News, under the chairmanship of Steve Bannon, has put a stake through the heart of Andrew’s legacy. In my opinion, Steve Bannon is a bully, and has sold out Andrew’s mission in order to back another bully, Donald Trump; he has shaped the company into Trump’s personal Pravda, to the extent that he abandoned and undercut his own reporter, Breitbart News’ Michelle Fields, in order to protect Trump’s bully campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, who allegedly assaulted Michelle."[9]
