Brenda K. Sannes is the chief judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York. She has served as chief judge since 2022. On May 8, 2014, President Barack Obama (D) nominated Sannes to fill a vacancy on the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York.[1] Sannes was confirmed to the court on November 20, 2014, when the United States Senate voted 96-0 in favor of her nomination.[2]

Prior to joining the court, she was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York.

Biography

Education

Sannes earned her B.A. from Carleton College, graduating magna cum laude in 1980, and her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating magna cum laude in 1983.[3][4]

Brenda K. Sannes was nominated by President Barack Obama on May 8, 2014, to fill a vacancy on the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York. The vacancy was created when Norman Mordue took senior status in 2013. President Obama on the nomination:

I am proud to nominate Brenda K. Sannes to serve on the United States District Court bench. She has a long and distinguished record of service, and I am confident she will serve on the federal bench with distinction.[1][6]

The American Bar Association rated Sannes Unanimously Well Qualified to serve on the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York.[7]

The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing for Sannes on June 24, 2014.[8] The committee reported Sannes to the full Senate on July 17, 2014, on a voice vote.[9]

The Senate confirmed Sannes on November 20, 2014, by a vote of 96-0.[10]
