Brenda Lyerly earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Houston and a master's degree in higher education administration from Appalachian State University in 1985. Her career experience includes working as the senior director of admissions with Appalachian State University. Lyerly was first elected to serve as mayor of Banner Elk, North Carolina, in 2011.[1]
