Candidate Connection

Brent Beal participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on February 27, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Brent Beal's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) economic development

2) equal opportunity for all
3) healthcare reform[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I'm passionate about immigration reform (among other things). I support meaningful immigration reform that affirms our commitment to welcoming immigrants into this country in a safe and orderly manner. Congress should act immediately to pass a “clean” Dream Act to protect the millions of young people who came here as infants and children with their parents.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Brent Beal answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to politicians (regardless of party) that do their best to represent the interests of everyone in their communities and strive to find public policy solutions that improve the lives of everyone they represent.[4]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Three books (that I've read relatively recently and have shaped some of my thinking): American Nations: A History of the Eleven Regional Cultures of North American, by Colin Woodard; Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right, by Arlie Russell Hochschild; and Capital in the Twenty-First Century, by Thomas Piketty. Although I read it a while ago, I would also have to add Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow to this list.[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
A willingness to serve and a willingness to listen to (and to represent) everyone in their community.[4]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
In my professional life, I'm a business professor. I teach strategic management to MBAs and I research the connection between how we teach in business schools and income inequality. Applying this experience will help to make me a successful officeholder.[4]
