Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on King's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Jobs and Economy: Middle-class families in Florida and the 16th District were hit hard by the recession. They struggle to keep up with rising cost of basic living expenses, gasoline, college education and healthcare. Over the past 30 years special interest such as Wall Street, lobbyist and corporations have slowly changed the rules; redistributing wealth and income to the wealthiest and most powerful people of this country.
  • Social Security and Medicare: Brent believes in the promise we have made to our seniors: that after a life time of hard work every American should be able to retire with dignity and the peace of mind these programs provide. Today Social Security is more important than ever. More than a one-third of seniors depend on Social Security for 90% of their income and roughly half of all workers between the ages of 55-64 have no real retirement savings.
  • Education: As a former high school teacher, Brent knows the value of education. Investing in our children’s education not only benefits the individual child and family, but is also an investment in our community and economic future. Education is the “Great Equalizer.” That’s why Brent supports reining in the cost of college tuition and allowing students to refinance their loan debt at current rates. We have the best universities in the world and we should work hard to sustain them! At the same time we should invest in our community and technical colleges, so the workforce of tomorrow is fully equipped to compete on the global stage.
  • Veterans: There is no more sacred commitment than the one we have made to our men and women who have served our country. They have done all we have asked, putting their lives on the line day in and day out around the globe. It is our job to ensure they are able to transition to successful civilian careers with education, training and job placement. We must support and strengthen the military families who serve alongside our men and women in uniform. Brent will work tirelessly to make sure our veterans have access to timely and high quality healthcare they so deserve.
  • Environment: Climate change is a serious issue facing Florida. We need to protect our beautiful beaches, coastal waters, swamps, marshes, forest and grasslands. From coastal erosion, storm surge, rising tides and flooding, Florida and the 16th District have a vested interest to lead the effort to protect our environment. Reducing our carbon footprint are our first steps. Brent supports efforts to develop and deploy clean, sustainable energy technologies like energy efficiency, solar, wind and geothermal solutions. He wants to help make America the world’s "Clean Energy Superpower."
