|I am a retired educator of 30 years. I taught history (mainly U.S. History), government, and financial literacy. I am in my 4th year on the Utah State Board of Education. I also served 12 years on the South Ogden City Council.
My wife, Michel is also an educator. She is currently serving as an elementary principal.
We are the parents of seven children and 4 grandchildren.
Being educators is hard work and we love it. We wouldn't want to be doing anything else.
I have the time, energy and passion for being advocates for the children of Utah.- I am solutions oriented - I'm not willing to spotlight the problems in our education system without finding solutions.
Problem: Parents were concerned about their children being indoctrinated, and teachers were left vulnerable without clear neutrality standards. Solution: I pushed to update the professional standards rule and provide training that insured neutrality in the classroom and alleviates parental concerns about what is being taught in schools. Problem: Disruptive student behavior.
Solution: I worked with two legislators on policies that have become law to support students, families, and teachers with increased training and better support systems. No student has the right to disrupt another student's right to learn. - Problem: Paid professional time was eliminated. Solution: I recommended and promoted the draft legislation that eventually led to legislative action giving teachers 32 hours of flexible professional paid time. An additional 10 million dollars will be added for the upcoming year. Problem: CRT (Critical Race Theory) Solution: Set clear Utah standards. Our teachers need to know what cannot be taught in the classroom. I was one of only three board members who drafted a rule requiring all teachers to be explicitly trained that they could not teach the tenets of CRT as outlined in statute. Then I was one of only six board members who aligned that training with the most recent DEI "prohibited practice".
- Providing quality core learning standards. Supporting teacher growth and excellence by providing the tools necessary for success. Advocating to the legislature for the resources necessary to provide equal opportunity to all Utah students.
2. Academic Excellence.
3. Teacher advocacy.
