Two seats on the Brentwood Union Free School District Board of Education were up for general election on May 20, 2014.

Board First Vice President Helen Moss defeated incumbent Michael Jahkhah and challenger Eileen Felix to win Jahkhah's seat. Elizabeth Mercado defeated Wendy Rodriguez, Michael Sgroi, George Talley. and Timothy Wilson to win Moss' former seat.[1] Moss and Mercado, Jahkhah and Wilson, and Felix and Rodriguez ran as three separate slates for the two seats.[2]

Brentwood Union Free School District is located in Suffolk County, New York. The county seat of Suffolk County is Riverhead, New York. Suffolk County had a population of 1,499,738 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[3] Brentwood Union Free was the sixth-largest school district in New York, serving 17,143 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[4]

Demographics

In 2012, Suffolk County had a slightly lower percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 32.6 percent of residents aged 25 and older in the county had earned a bachelor's degree, compared to 32.8 percent for New York. The median household income in Suffolk County was $87,778, above the state median of $57,683. The poverty rate in the county was 6.1 percent, compared to 14.9 percent statewide.[3]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Brentwood Union Free Board of Education consisted of seven members. All members were elected to three-year terms by specific geographic districts that were aligned with the district's elementary school attendance areas. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on May 20, 2014. Two seats were up for election in 2014.

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was April 21, 2014. Candidates had to file nominating petitions with at least 45 legitimate signatures to get on the ballot.[6]

Additional elections on the ballot

This election shared the ballot with a budget proposal and one additional proposition made by the Brentwood Union Free School District, both of which were approved by voters.[6][9] The 2014-2015 budget proposal totaled up to $354,634,052, which was a 4.28 percent increase from the 2013-2014 budget. The second proposition allowed the board of education to create a system of open voter registration for future elections.[10]
