Campaign themes

2012

Phillips' campaign website listed the following issues:[1]

  • World Class Education – From Cradle to College
Excerpt: "To close the growing achievement gap, let’s improve expectations in the classroom, – especially in science, technology, and math, – invest in academic coaches and mentorships for low-income and at risk youth, and allow flexibility in curriculum to accommodate different needs, cultures and circumstances. We must improve access for local students to community colleges and four-year degree universities."
  • Job Growth and Economic Competitiveness
Excerpt: "In 2013, I will introduce a clean energy jobs bill called Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) that will significantly increase the ability of Washington State businesses and residents to invest in efficient and renewable energy products while creating thousands of jobs. ...Our state can be a partner in job development by investing in infrastructure and new technologies to help us compete globally."
  • Affordable and Accessible Healthcare
Excerpt: "With more than 1 million Washingtonians uninsured, and many more suffering from medical-related financial ruin, health care must be a top priority for the Legislature. Affordable, accessible health care is a right, not privilege, and it must be available to each and every Washingtonian. ...As a NARAL 100% Pro-Choice Candidate, I firmly believe in a women’s right to govern her own body and the health care choices she pursues."
  • Environmental Protection
Excerpt: "As our state’s population increases, we must balance vibrant urban communities with the protection of our farms, forests, and waterways. And with the reality of climate change, we must take bold action to reduce carbon emissions and embrace alternative forms of energy."
  • Multi-modal Transportation
Excerpt: "Our region requires comprehensive, multi-modal transportation solutions that combine clean, efficient transit along with infrastructure that supports the movement of goods and services. I support transportation packages that provide sustainable funding for regional bus service, light rail expansion, safe cycling, and critical bridge and corridor improvements to improve efficient movement of people and freight."
  • Fairness, Equity, and Social Justice
Excerpt: "In challenging economic times like the one we face, it is imperative that we focus on our values to provide equal opportunity and strong safety nets for those most in need. ...The dramatic swings we have seen of late have led to unacceptable cuts to essential health and human services when people need them most."
