Edwards was elected to the 30th Judicial Circuit. He defeated challenger John J. Vandertoll with 50.17 percent of the vote on November 2, 2010.[3][4]
In a statement to the Courier-Journal, Edwards explained his vision for the court, saying, "My experience presiding over cases for the past fourteen months, speaking with law enforcement officers and to community groups, working as a trial attorney, and teaching and doing research at the University of Louisville have given me an appreciation for the complexities of crime and the collateral consequences of the manner in which our justice system addresses issues of crime. We need Judges who appreciate these complexities, who are committed to protecting our community, and who will be open to collaborative and creative approaches to making our community a safer place to live for all."
