The Appleton Post Crescent surveyed the school board candidates. According to the Crescent, responses were edited for clarity and length. Below are Epley's responses:[4]

Why are you running for office?

In the sixth grade, I joined the Boys’ & Girls’ Brigade, and I have been an active volunteer leader for the last 21 years. I also graduated from Neenah High School in 1997. My three children attend Wilson Elementary. I have volunteered for their school events, and through that experience, I have become more interested in getting involved with our schools.

By joining the school board, I can take on a more active role in contributing to my community and the school district. My continued desire to invest in the success of the Neenah public schools comes from my desire to see my own children, as well as all the children of this community, succeed in their educational journeys. I am beyond excited for this opportunity. The Brigade taught me that wherever you go in life, you should “leave it better than you found it.” This is my town; this is my district; and I want to leave the NJSD better than I found it.[5]

—Brian Epley[4]

What do you think are the key issues facing the community?

Many of Neenah’s school facilities are showing their age and are not properly suited to the modern educational environment. The continuing discussion about building new facilities and decisions about how to proceed with that are vital to the success of Neenah schools.

My background in engineering and construction gives me an informed perspective to make the best decisions for our schools. Additionally, the new facilities should be built with the goal of making Neenah a desirable district and drawing in people who move to the Fox Cities. With some key changes, we can bring back students who now attend schools outside of our district.

Another important issue in our community is homelessness. Students who don’t have a place to sleep or reliable meals to eat cannot succeed in school in the way that they need. I believe we need to work with community partners, social workers, and churches to develop strategies for helping homeless students excel, so that they can ensure a better future for themselves.[5]

—Brian Epley[4]

What do you hope to accomplish, if elected?

I want to use my experience and my connections in the community to build bridges between the schools and local businesses, both not-for-profits and professionals.

Neenah has a wealth of talented individuals whose skills could be utilized to improve the educational experience of every child in the district. I hope to leverage those resources to make our district a desirable destination for both students and teachers.[5]
