Brian Faleshock is a Region 1 representative on the Central Dauphin School District school board in Pennsylvania. First elected in 2009, Faleshock won a new term in the by-district general election on November 7, 2017.
Pennsylvania permits school board candidates to cross-file in primary elections. This means that a candidate may file to run in the primary election for both the Democratic and Republican parties. If a candidate cross-files, he or she needs to win in one party's primary election to advance to the general election. A candidate may also appear on both party's ballots in the general election if he or she wins both nominations in the primary.
Biography
Faleshock is a public insurance adjuster. He is also a state certified firefighter and EMT-B. Faleshock has previously served as treasurer of the Swatara Township Volunteer Fireman's Association, treasurer of the Central Dauphin East Football Booster Club, president of the Chambers Hill Fire Company, and assistant fire chief with the Chambers Hill Fire Company. He has also served as a volunteer coach with the Chambers Hill Athletic Association, a volunteer referee with Paxton Basketball, and a volunteer coach with Brightbill Park Summer Basketball League. Faleshock studied at the Harrisburg Area Community College after he graduated from Northeast Public High School.[1]
Elections
2017
Five of the nine seats on the Central Dauphin School District school board were up for general election on November 7, 2017. Two Region 1 seats, two Region 2 seats, and one Region 3 seat were up for election. All seats were up for election for four-year terms, except for one of the Region 2 seats, which was up for a two-year term. A partisan primary election was held on May 16, 2017.
Board incumbents Brian Faleshock and Jeanne Webster defeated challenger Beth Sviben in the general election. All three cross-filed to run in both the Democratic and Republican primary elections for the Region 1 seats. Webster won both a Democratic and Republican nomination, Sviben won the other Democratic nomination, and Faleshock won the other Republican nomination, all advancing to the general. For the four-year term, incumbent Eric Epstein and newcomer Richard Mazzatesta cross-filed for the seat, with Epstein winning both the Democratic and Republican nomination and moving on to the general, where he faced no opposition. For the two-year term, incumbent Eric Mock and Mazzatesta cross-filed. Mock won the Democratic nomination and Mazzatesta won the Republican nomination, both advancing to the general. Mazzatesta then defeated Mock in the general election. Two newcomers cross-filed for the open Region 3 seat: Pamela Pertillar and Justin Warren. Pertillar won the Democratic nomination and Warren won the Republican nomination, with both moving on to the general. Warren then defeated Pertillar in the general election.[2][3][4]
These candidates could have faced independent candidates in the general election. However, no independent candidate filed by the August 1, 2017, deadline to get on the ballot.

School board candidates in Pennsylvania were required to report their campaign finance activity. Those who spent or received more than $250 in a reporting period had to file full reports. Those below the threshold had to file forms to declare they were exempt from reporting. Candidates could have, but were not required to, form committees to handle campaign finance transactions. They were not required to have separate bank accounts for campaign purposes.[7]
The table to the left details the four campaign finance deadlines in 2017.[6]

Campaign themes
2009
Faleshock's campaign website listed the following stances:[9]
Educating Our Children
|
"Unfortunately, the news is not good from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Under the No Child Left Behind law, schools enter "Corrective Action" status when they fail to make "Adequate Yearly Progress" (AYP) for four years. Schools that fail to make AYP for a fifth year move into "Corrective Action II," subjecting them to the most stringent remedies under the law. Our community high school, Central Dauphin East High School is currently in Corrective Action II status for the second year. A school that does not make “Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two consecutive years, as AYP is defined by the State’s accountability system, must be identified for “School Improvement”. Our community middle school, Swatara Middle School is currently in School Improvement I status. Knowing the principals and the staff at these two schools the way that I do, I intend to open up a direct line of communication with the administration and the educators on how I can help them achieve success with their students. It is imperative that we take measures to form a Parent Outreach Initiative, which will engage families with their community to become partners to increase student achievement. Together, we can make a difference." |
Property Taxes
|
"While I don’t pretend to know all of the answers, what I do know is that our taxpayers can no longer afford to carry the heavy burden of an additional tax increase. Our School Board should be doing what every other American family has been doing since the onslaught of the plummeting economy – and that’s tightening their budget. We all wish that the economy was robust and expanding, but as we face the reality of the situation, there is no escaping the fact that our School Board needs to make some tough financial decisions. But now is the time for the School Board members to step up, make the tough decisions that need to be made, and show that in times of crisis, we can and will step forward and work to carry the Central Dauphin School District forward. " |
Spending
|
"The current Central Dauphin School District approved budget is in excess of $150,000,000 (One hundred and fifty million dollars). Some members of the current School Board have blocked all attempts by their colleagues to bring forth discussion on tightening the budget. If these particular School Board members are permitted to remain in office, you will inevitably be left supporting an inflated budget and an almost certain tax increase. " |
Transparency
|
"I want to see more transparency from our School Board. If elected, I will strongly dissuade closed door meetings and secret voting, which has inevitably shut out many of the School Board members and their opinions. This is our School Board and after speaking to many of my constituents, you have spoken loud and clear, “We want a voice in the School Board’s decisions.” " |
