Hello, I am Brian Lee Merrill and I am asking your permission to serve you as your South Carolina State Representative from District 93. I am not a Democrat or a Republican. I am independent of towing their party lines and serving the political establishment. I stand against corruption. But most of all, I believe in the freedom that the Constitution of the United States guarantees.
- South Carolina to govern South Carolina. Big Brother government cannot and has not effectively or efficiently governed. Restore the intent of the 9th and 10th Amendments.
- Cut wasteful spending, with those savings being applied to worthwhile spending, or put into a Tax Relief Fund that cannot be robbed by the legislature, and paid out to the taxpayers of South Carolina.
- I am not a career politician, and public service should never become a career. I have no intentions to serve more than three terms.
The freedoms and opportunities that are afforded by the Constitution, and the moral fight against transgressions against it.
My Blessed Lord Savior. His teachings are near and dear: teach everyone with respect and dignity, love your fellow man and woman as He loves us, and recognize that we all can agree to disagree while maintaining that respect.
The document is easy: The Constitution of the United States.
The movie (as passe as it may sound): Mr. Smith Goes to Washington starring Jimmy Stewert
Honesty, integrity, nonpartisanship, and transparency! This should be a no-brainer, but as you can see from the world we are now in, it isn't.
Honesty and Integrity. I don't think I could exist without them.
To serve his or her constituency within the bounds of the US Constitution and the Constitution of South Carolina, with no thought of personal gain, power-lust, or social engineering. Simply doing the right thing.
True and pure Public Service as it was meant to be, not what it has become.
I was in grade school when the Challenger shuttle exploded. My teacher put the coverage on the TV for us to witness a moment in history. I have always had a strong interest in history, and that may have been the starting point for me.
My first official job after graduating high school was as a CNC machinist at Bellwright Industries in Summerville, SC. I worked there about 8 months.
Bible. It has all the lessons I need to be a good human being, and how to treat others. No matter whether you believe it is fact or fiction, you can't argue that it is indeed a blueprint to being a descent human being.
Gandolf from the Lord of the Rings. Wise, loving, and willing to sacrifice for the greater good.
Watching the slow decline of our Country. We had such a fantastic blueprint to follow (the Constitution), and we managed to allow it to be neglected, manipulated, ignored, and diluted to the condition we see today. We MUST restore it!
As it was intended, originally, the State Senate should evaluate and write legislation based on the needs of local government and the Constitutionality of such legislation. The House brings forth legislation from the concerns of the citizens of South Carolina, while those also should be evaluated for Constitutionality.
It's a double-edged sword. While the experience can be valuable (in it's uncorrupted form), but as we have seen all too often, that experience is indeed used for corrupt purposes. I would rather see new blood in our Legislature on a regular basis.
Holding on to our Constitutional foundations with all the social unrest and hurdles that have been thrown at America in recent years. It is far too easy to reach for the instant gratification "solutions" while sacrificing what makes America great because it isn't "easy".
Working together for the greater good of the State, even if it means the greater good is coming from the opposite side of the aisle. Neither the Legislature nor the Governor should see the other as a threat to their power, and not losing sight that that power exists for a greater purpose.
Absolutely. Everyone has ideas. Everyone has good ideas sometimes, and bad ideas at other times. If they can look past personal gain, partisanship, and corruption, come together, and bounce ideas off each other with honest and pure evaluation, we would see a surge of progress for South Carolina.
Using a non-partisan outside group to redrawn the line with the focus of efficiency and fairness. DO NOT allow the political parties or politicians to drawn their own self-serving lines! This process is included as a part of the American Anti-Corruption Act, which I whole-heartedly support.
Not specifically. I would be there to serve the State and People of South Carolina, in whatever capacity is needed of me.
I have no intentions of ever being a part of the Democratic or Republican Parties. I would consider being involved with another party that proves it has pure motivations and will not strangle the free thought of it's candidates.
No one in particular. I would like to come in fresh, in the right spirit of Public Service - TRUE Public Service - and hopefully leave a legacy of such for future legislators to follow.
It's possible. I don't have designs on that at this time.
Not yet, but I am eager to.
