An effort in Lafayette, Louisiana, to recall City Marshal Brian Pope from his position was launched in June 2017. An unnamed petitioner filed recall paperwork with the Louisiana Secretary of State on June 12, 2017.[1] Petitioners failed to submit enough signatures to get the recall on the ballot.[2]

The recall effort focused on Pope's indictment on perjury and malfeasance charges in November 2016. The perjury charges stemmed from a December 2015 deposition given by Pope that he did not supply emails related to the race for parish sheriff to the general public. This deposition was part of an investigation of allegations that Pope was working with sheriff candidate Chad Leger in his 2015 race against Mark Garber, who won the election. The malfeasance charges alleged that Pope failed to perform the duties of his office on four occasions.[1]

State law requires supporters to submit at least 27,500 valid signatures to the parish registrar of voters within 180 days of initial paperwork filing. The deadline for submitting signatures was December 7, 2017. If the registrar of voters verifies enough signatures for a recall, the governor establishes a date for the election.[1]
