Campaign themes

2016

Cook's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

  • Every child should be given an opportunity to develop their talent to pursue a trade, a college education, or public or military service. We owe it to our communities to make sure they receive the funding necessary to create safe, efficient, and effective school systems with resources to encourage academic success and positive participation on co-curricular activities. Children who are good citizens are our greatest resource and our greatest accomplishment.

Employment

  • A good job is the cornerstone of a good life, a functioning community, an opportunity for home ownership, and the foundation for building strong families. Every effort must be made to encourage businesses to consider our communities as places suitable for their businesses and their work force. Small businesses and places of employment need to be assisted in providing services and employment options close to home.

Transportation

  • We cannot be held hostage to inefficient and costly transportation options. The system is broken and the traffic, lack of commuting options, and inefficient commuting alternatives must be addressed to improve our lives and provide more time at work or at home – and less time stuck in traffic.

Substance Abuse

  • Any member of our society who is struggling with dependency issues impacts a productive society. In addition to the emotional cost there are manpower hours lost, increases in crime, and depletion of our police and community resources; these are costs we cannot bear to incur. Greater effort must be made to address substance abuse in the schools. Resources must be employed to provide support, counseling and recovery. Costs to be incurred are better spent addressing the problem rather than reacting to its byproducts.

Senior Care

  • Our seniors who have spent their lives providing for us need to be respected and cared for them they can no longer care for themselves. Affordable housing options, assisted living option, and reasonably priced nursing home facilities are the mark of a caring, successful society. Our seniors should be honored not discarded.

Veterans

  • To those who served I say thank you. But ‘thank you’ is not enough. We need to make sure that those who sacrificed for our freedom and security are assisted, honored, and encouraged to transition back into our community with housing, medical care, and training to secure a well-paying job that allows them to use the skills learned while in service, and be taught skills needed to compete in today’s economy. God knows they have earned that.[1]
