Campaign themes

2016

Smith's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

  • Education: Brian understands that the best governing body for public schools is the community’s local government. Brian believes that the local elected officials should decide districting and school funding.
  • Transportation: The current Administration’s approach to improving and funding transportation is fiscally irresponsible. Using future tax dollars to fund current projects is unsustainable. Brian will work with transportation stakeholders to come up with a long term plan that maintain and improve our infrastructure. And he will help propose funding methods that will not hurt our future.
  • Issues on government: Brian has always supported legislation that he says he will. Our current senator talks a good game but when he goes to Madison he votes in lock step with his Republican colleagues. Brian understands the importance of legislators working together to do what is best for the people of Wisconsin.
  • Environment: Funding the DNR is essential to preservation of Wisconsin’s natural resources. Currently there is not enough staff to oversee all of Wisconsin’s environmental needs. I would work to increase the DNR’s funding to restore the senior staff positions that were cut as a part of the last budget.
  • Women's issues: As a brother of 4 sisters, a husband and a father of 2 daughters; I do not believe there should be any legislation passed down from our government regarding what women can do with their bodies. It is wrong what the Republicans in Wisconsin and across the country are doing to infringe on women’s health issues.[2]
