Recall supporters

The recall effort was initiated by a group called The Committee to Recall the Mayor of Nixa in response to a COVID-19 mask mandate put in place by Steele through emergency powers. The mask mandate in Nixa lasted from October 2020 to April 2021. Petition language stated that Steele should be removed from office "for individually and without regard to the citizens of Nixa, nor the vote of city council, enacting a mask mandate, and taking other actions detrimental to the city of Nixa, its economy and the health and welfare of the community in general."[1][2]

Recall opponents

Commenting on the mask mandates, Steele said, "everyone is entitled to their own opinion but in this particular case, it was up to me to make that decision and I made the decision I thought was best."
