My name is Bride Rose Sweeney. Bride is an Irish family name; I was named after my grandmother. Growing up on the westside, I attended Saint Joseph Academy and then John Carroll University, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts and studied political science, business, and leadership. After college, I joined Ohio’s Legislative Service Commission Fellowship, a competitive public service program that prepares the state’s next generation of leaders. I also worked in a variety of roles in the Ohio Senate, including as a senior advisor to the Minority Leader and a legislative aide to Senator Lou Gentile, an Appalachian Democrat.

I never thought that I would run for office, but after working several years at the Ohio Statehouse -- seeing harmful policies take shape and hurt our families and communities -- I decided that I had to step up. When I was elected in November 2018, I became the first woman ever to represent my community at the Statehouse and the youngest Democratic member of the 133rd Ohio General Assembly. I am now a two-term Democratic member of the Ohio House of Representatives for Western Cuyahoga County, serving as Ranking Member of the Ohio House Finance Committee and the lead Democratic sponsor of the bipartisan Fair School Funding Plan that became law on July 1, 2021. I am determined to continue using my legislative experience to do the real and challenging work of state government; standing up to extremists and delivering for our communities.

  • I am running for re-election because Ohio needs more leaders who are committed to finding real solutions to the problems we face, not finding more ways to divide us. As Democrat, I passed nine bills in four years in a GOP supermajority. Examples include legislation to ensure prompt pay for workers, protection for nurses being forced into excessive overtime, and reforms to help students transfer college credits, earn a degree and incur less debt. As the sponsor of the Fair School Funding Plan, I built on a 5-year bipartisan effort and succeeded in finally overhauling Ohio’s broken, unconstitutional school funding formula. I'll fight to fully fund the plan, put the needs of students first and ease Ohio's over-reliance on property taxes.
  • Since taking office, I have consistently been a much-needed voice of reason at the Ohio Statehouse, pushing back against extremists and derailing bad policy ideas on issues ranging from guns to voting rights. One of the ways I’ve demonstrated that I can do this is when, in my first year as a lawmaker, my office used public records requests and other tools to uncover errors in the Secretary of State’s voter registration purge. We found over a thousand voters wrongfully removed from the rolls in Cuyahoga County alone, resulting in the Secretary reversing course to restore registrations across Ohio. As a superminority party, Ohio Democrats must be able to meaningfully hold the majority accountable while still delivering for our constituents.
  • The newly drawn House District 16 is a very competitive open seat that leans only a few points Democratic. I initially decided to run in this seat in March to avoid a Democratic Primary and give Ohioans the best possible chance at breaking the Republican Supermajority, which has been so destructive to the State of Ohio. I believe that my record and experience will prove that I am not only the best-qualified candidate for the job but also the best-suited to win this seat in November. I am endorsed by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Ohio Education Association, the Cleveland Building Trades, and numerous local elected officials, among others.
I have a passion for and experience in state budgeting. Two different Minority Leaders selected me to be the top Democrat on the powerful Ohio House Finance Committee, which crafts our $74 billion biennial operating budget. Additionally, I serve as your fiscal watchdog on the State Controlling Board, overseeing millions in state contracts and fighting against outsourcing and for Ohio jobs. I am the only woman appointed to that body. If re-elected, I promise to use those platforms to continue standing up against harmful policies from Columbus while delivering tangible results for Cuyahoga County.

Ohio deserves leaders who can be effective at pushing back against extremists and still get things done. It's important to do both. We must keep fighting for fair legislative maps that truly reflect the will of the voters, especially on the issues that are most under attack by the supermajority, like women's reproductive freedom and our sacred right to vote. As the lead sponsor of the Fair School Funding Plan, I built on a five-year bipartisan effort and succeeded in finally overhauling Ohio’s broken and unconstitutional school funding formula. I will fight relentlessly to ensure the plan is fully funded, providing nearly $2 billion for public education and job training. This new framework is a historic step toward putting the needs of our children first and reducing the state’s over-reliance on property taxes that hurts our seniors the most.

Scorecards

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
