Brisbois appointed federal magistrate judge for Minnesota
August 26, 2010
Minnesota: Yesterday, Leo Brisbois was appointed Magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota. Announcing the appointment, chief judge of the Minnesota court Michael James Davis (Minnesota) said, "The bench is confident that Brisbois will bring to the courtroom the same leadership, respect for others and commitment to service that he has demonstrated throughout his career.”[1]
Brisbois is currently the President of the Minnesota Bar Association and has been a lawyer with a private firm since 1991. Prior to joining that firm, he served in the U.S. Army as part of the JAG Corps.[1]
Brisbois will act as successor to retiring Raymond Erickson, who is leaving the bench on Friday after 19 years.[2]
Brisbois has already served with distinction, as the first person of known Native American descent to be president of the Minnesota Bar Association. He is a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe Indians. About this he noted, "The values which were instilled in me while growing up on the Iron Range and which will serve as touchstones to guide me in the performance of my new duties as a Magistrate Judge are a commitment to hard work, the treatment of all persons with respect and dignity, and an unwavering dedication to equal justice under law."[2]
