|- My primary concern, before anything else, is student success. I want students leaving the North Kansas City School District to be confident, capable, and prepared to join society as productive citizens. I want our students to be set up for fulfilling lives, where they go and whatever they choose to do.
- If we want our students to be successful then the North Kansas City School District must be fiercely committed to student welfare. There are many challenges facing our young people but perhaps none is more prevalent today than the well documented issue of poor teen mental health. Schools cannot be expected to solve this problem but they are on the front lines of fighting it! Our students cannot be successful if they are not well and I will be fiercely committed to improving our students well being.
- Finally, I want better for our teachers. I want to see low teacher turnover, high teacher pay, and high job satisfaction. Happy teachers mean happy students.
My two favorite fiction books I read were: Les Miserables which was deeply moving, and the Grapes of Wrath. Steinbeck is a brilliant writer and I was shocked by how powerful his description of a corn plant growing and and a farmers attachment to their land was. I found myself thinking often of my grandfather who was also a farmer.
My favorite nonfiction books I read last year were Of Boys and Men by Richard V. Reeves which documents some of the challenges faced by modern American men while offering some potential solutions and Technopoly by Neil Postman which was an interesting critique of many of the foundations of modern society.
I love reading books about American History: I have read biographies on Samuel Adams, Martha Washington, and James Madison in the last year and I just finished a book on Lincoln. I also enjoy reading political commentary from a diverse range of voices and from every side of the political spectrum. I will read just about any nonfiction book that sounds interesting at the moment.
But I landed on the Bishop of Digne from Les Miserables. I am deeply inspired by Victor Hugo's tale of this bishop who committed his life to mercy, compassion, and forgiveness. He gives Jean Valjean a second chance and is an example of what true Christianity looks like. His actions change the course of Valjean's life and following his doctrine of love and unfailing kindness would make us all better people.
When I think of the teachers who have made an impact in my life it is not the teachers who helped me improve my scores on a government mandated test. It is the teachers that made me valued, that helped me fall in love with a subject matter, or the teachers that made me feel trusted or like I could accomplish something.
