As a devoted Kansas Citian, I love the Northland and I am proud to be raising my family here. I believe in public service and I want to do whatever I can to serve and improve my communities. As a father of four current and soon-to-be students, I am very interested in the direction of the North Kansas City School District and that is why I want to serve as a member of the Board of Education. I work as an attorney, I own my own legal practice serving estate planning and small business clients, and when I am not being a dad or a lawyer I enjoy reading, going for long bike rides, playing or watching soccer, and baking.
  • My primary concern, before anything else, is student success. I want students leaving the North Kansas City School District to be confident, capable, and prepared to join society as productive citizens. I want our students to be set up for fulfilling lives, where they go and whatever they choose to do.
  • If we want our students to be successful then the North Kansas City School District must be fiercely committed to student welfare. There are many challenges facing our young people but perhaps none is more prevalent today than the well documented issue of poor teen mental health. Schools cannot be expected to solve this problem but they are on the front lines of fighting it! Our students cannot be successful if they are not well and I will be fiercely committed to improving our students well being.
  • Finally, I want better for our teachers. I want to see low teacher turnover, high teacher pay, and high job satisfaction. Happy teachers mean happy students.
I love public education and its important role in our society. I am a firm believer that strong public schools are the backbone of a strong community. The North Kansas City School District is a crucial part of why the Northland is such a great place to live. This is a legacy I want to strengthen and continue. As the North Kansas City School District is able to offer a high quality education to young people in our community it will have a tangible positive effect on everyone!
Integrity, humility, passion, and a commitment to putting the wants and needs of others before your own.
I want my children to know I am devoted to helping other people and improving my communities. I want to leave a legacy of public service.
My first job was refereeing soccer games for the Excelsior Springs Parks and Recreation soccer league. I refereed five and six year olds. It was something of an impossible task, which I have relearned now that I coach my children's soccer teams. There is lots of crying, distraction, and always that one kid who just gets it and scores 50 goals every game.
I love to read and this is a dangerous question to get me started on. I will decline to appoint a favorite book but last year I read a couple of books that I really enjoyed.

My two favorite fiction books I read were: Les Miserables which was deeply moving, and the Grapes of Wrath. Steinbeck is a brilliant writer and I was shocked by how powerful his description of a corn plant growing and and a farmers attachment to their land was. I found myself thinking often of my grandfather who was also a farmer.

My favorite nonfiction books I read last year were Of Boys and Men by Richard V. Reeves which documents some of the challenges faced by modern American men while offering some potential solutions and Technopoly by Neil Postman which was an interesting critique of many of the foundations of modern society.

I love reading books about American History: I have read biographies on Samuel Adams, Martha Washington, and James Madison in the last year and I just finished a book on Lincoln. I also enjoy reading political commentary from a diverse range of voices and from every side of the political spectrum. I will read just about any nonfiction book that sounds interesting at the moment.

Currently I am reading the latest Percy Jackson book and a biography of Simon Bolivar.
Initially I leaned toward Aragorn, he is the model of a great human. Strong, kind, noble, and able to resist the draw of power and the one rind. Also, I really wish I could pull off long hair like Viggo Mortensen does, but I cannot.

But I landed on the Bishop of Digne from Les Miserables. I am deeply inspired by Victor Hugo's tale of this bishop who committed his life to mercy, compassion, and forgiveness. He gives Jean Valjean a second chance and is an example of what true Christianity looks like. His actions change the course of Valjean's life and following his doctrine of love and unfailing kindness would make us all better people.
Oh boy.. Probably something by Bad Bunny
To advocate for and proudly represent the North Kansas City School District. To work together with the other members of the board to create the vision and direction of the district and to make the best possible decisions for the good of the district and its students.
Everyone in the North Kansas City School District, whether they voted for me or not, or even, whether they voted or not.
It is not possible to measure good teaching. How do you measure whether students love learning or are willing to try new or hard things? How do you measure when a student is in need of individualized attention, gets that attention, and gains the confidence they need to succeed?

When I think of the teachers who have made an impact in my life it is not the teachers who helped me improve my scores on a government mandated test. It is the teachers that made me valued, that helped me fall in love with a subject matter, or the teachers that made me feel trusted or like I could accomplish something.

You cannot measure good teaching, but I will do everything I can to encourage it.
It is very important to me that parents feel involved in their children's education. I want to hear from the parents and help them to feel value, I want parents to feel like they have a voice in the direction of the district.
