Campaign themes

2016

Futrell's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

  • A high quality public education system is the foundation of our economy. Our public schools, community colleges, and universities must be funded so they have the necessary resources to educate and prepare our young people for the jobs of the future.
  • Our economy is also dependent upon the protection and preservation of our natural resources. Otherwise tourism, fishing, and agriculture will cease to thrive in Northeastern North Carolina. I pledge to you that I will do everything within my power to protect our magnificent environment.
  • Our legislative leaders hide behind veils of secrecy as they go about the business of making laws. We must have open, transparent government to preserve the public trust. I will work unceasingly to make government transparent and accessible to all, not just the select few.
  • Finally, a legislature that strips citizens of important legal rights without debate is not acting democratically. Every citizen has a right to be heard when such legislation is being considered. To do otherwise is simply unacceptable. I will do everything in my power to ensure all the voices of North Carolina are heard during the legislative process.[1]
