Hanson answered the following questions for a survey printed in the Hudson Star-Observer:

Why are you running for the School Board?

I believe great schools delivering a great education are a vital component of successful communities like Hudson. As a father of two sons receiving their education here, I have a vested interest in ensuring Hudson’s tradition of strong, successful schools continues. While I believe schools require and deserve ongoing investment, I also believe taxpayers have a right to expect that public monies are spent responsibly while carrying the burden of delivering real results. I have a strong passion for education and our community, and know I can add value as a part of the team. Finally, my heart is in the same place as when I started three years ago, and my focus is still on providing the best for our kids and teachers without any specific personal agenda. All of our kids have a right to learn. All of our kids learn a different way, and I want to continue my efforts to ensure we create an environment that delivers on that right we all have been given.

What do you see as the most important issues facing the Hudson School District over the next two years and beyond?

I believe there are a few key initiatives facing our district that we need to stay focused on beyond excellence in our academic results. We have had a rich tradition of academic excellence, and our administration and staff are firm in their commitment towards ensuring growth and development in the years to come. As a board, we can help deliver on that commitment by driving to three key areas. First, we need to stay focused on continuing to hear the voice of the community on solving our space needs. Re-investing and transforming space for our future learners needs to continue to stay on the forefront until we have a solution. I am hopeful the collaborative proposal up for referendum gives us our next step to take action on. Secondly, we need to provide the right direction and focus for integrating technology into our schools and providing the appropriate resources to integrate for our staff and kids. Lastly, we have recently put in place a new teacher salary structure, and it is important we stay committed to creating a model, in this post ACT 10 landscape, that rewards and attracts the top talent that we have always had within the HSD.

How do you plan to address those issues as a School Board member?

Simply stated, continue to work as a team. No one board member controls decisions, and our greatest success will come when we all listen to one another and work together as a team.

We have worked hard over the last year as part of a Community Engagement Process to gather information on the right solution for our long-term space needs. That engagement process was meant to bring our community together to find a solution that can work for the majority of the people. Clearly, this is been a tough challenge for our community, and as a board member I need to stay focused on results and will remain committed to the task before us. Regarding the technology and teacher salary structure, we have a plan in place that we are moving forward with, and it will be important for us to monitor, ask the right questions and look at the data to adjust and tweak as necessary. Retaining and attracting the top talent for our staff requires we provide not only a competitive compensation structure, but also have a culture that is committed to collaboration, personal development and a positive environment to deliver enhanced results for all.

What makes you the best candidate for the job?

My profession has given me a great deal of experience managing complex issues. I believe the thoughtful listening, fact-based leadership and calm demeanor have served me in my working life and will continue to be of value in serving the Hudson community as a school board member. The past three years of experience on the Hudson School Board have been invaluable. The first year was an important start to gain an understanding of the important role a board member plays. Through active listening and observation, you then start to add value through listening to the community, the administration and bringing your thoughts forward in a collaborative way. Collectively, I believe we have made a transition with this board to actively promote the voice of the community, engage and incorporate ideas of ALL board members, and have successfully managed through a transition to a new superintendent. I am focused on trying to bring the best out in others through my leadership and will continue to develop myself personally to that end.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you and/or your candidacy for a School Board seat?

I want to continue in this role and would love your vote on April 5th. I recognize the value of education and truly have a passion for continuous learning -- regardless of what age we are. We have a great community, and I have been a part of this community through Junior Achievement the last seven years, the Daybreak Rotary club for the last six years, and the last three years on the Hudson School Board. I am committed to service and believe we have a lot of great work ahead of us to continue to build upon the amazing foundation many committed citizens have already put in place for this beautiful place we call home. Let's continue to make Hudson great. Thank you very much for your involvement and support in the past three years -- let's keep working together as a community![7]
