Bruce Burton
Bruce Burton (Democratic Party) ran for election to the Jackson City Council to represent Ward 7 in Mississippi. He lost in the Democratic primary on April 1, 2025.
Biography
Bruce Burton was born in Shaw, Mississippi, and lives in Belzoni, Mississippi. Burton earned a B.A. in political science from Alcorn State University in 1983, an M.Ed. in guidance and counseling from Delta State University in 1986, an M.Ed. in sociology from Delta State University in 1996, a J.D. from Southern University in 1999, and an M.P.H. in environmental and occupational health from Jackson State University in 2006. His career experience includes owning the Burton Law Firm and working with Southwest Mississippi Legal Services.[1][2]

Eleven state executive offices in Mississippi were up for election in 2015. The general election was held on November 3, 2015, following a primary election on August 4, 2015. Runoffs were scheduled for August 25 in case no candidate received a majority (50 percent plus one) of the popular vote in a given primary race.
Brown defeated Burton in the Democratic primary and faced Brent Bailey (R) and LaTrice D. Notree (I) in the general election.[3]

An elected official should possess the characteristic of truth, honesty, and integrity.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am a practicing attorney and a business owner. I believe in church, family, and community. To be the next Public Service Commissioner, one has to have the ability to interpret the laws, rules, and regulations; to be a fiduciary which my law practice requires, and to be transparent, open, and honest.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The core responsibilities include ensuring that rates are competitive and reasonable and in the best interest of the community at large.
What legacy would you like to leave?
The legacy I would like to leave is that I was honest, transparent, and I did the best of my ability in this position for the benefit of the public.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I remember the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I was seven years old.
What responsibilities of this office do you personally consider the most important?
The responsibilities of being transparent and of letting the public know exactly what is occurring in the Public Service Department.
What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?
Being an attorney, being trustworthy, open, honest and a fiduciary are important qualities to have.
