Arizona: Yesterday Governor Jan Brewer announced the appointment of Robert Brutinel to the Arizona Supreme Court. He succeeds Justice Michael D. Ryan (Arizona), who retired from the court in August 2010.[1]

The appointee has served as a judge on the Yavapai County Superior Court since 1996. During his career on the court, he was elected four times, each without opposition. Observers have noted that Brutinel's experience as a trial court judge made him especially appealing as a nominee for the Supreme Court.[2][3]

Of the appointment, Governor Brewer said, "Judge Brutinel is one of the most distinguished and accomplished jurists in our State. Although it will be difficult to fill the void left by the retirement of the Honorable Michael Ryan, I am certain Judge Brutinel is up to the challenge and will help the Arizona Supreme Court as it continues to lead the country in judicial excellence.”[2]

Brutinel was chosen for the position out of a group of thirteen applicants. He will join the Supreme Court once a replacement presiding judge is named on the Superior Court.[1]
