Three of the seven seats on the Bryan Independent School District school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Only incumbents filed in the election. District 1 incumbent Felicia Benford, District 3 incumbent Trey Moore, and District 5 incumbent Douglas Wunneburger won re-election without opposition.[1]

The Bryan Independent School District Board of Trustees consists of five by-district members and two at-large members elected to three-year terms. The filing period for Texas school board candidates running in fall elections started on July 23, 2016. The final day for candidates to file their applications for ballot placement was August 22, 2016. A candidate for school board in Texas must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the school district. The application for ballot placement also states that candidates cannot have felony convictions or court judgments verifying total mental incapacity on their records.[2]
The deadline to register to vote for the November election was October 11, 2016. The early voting period started on October 24, 2016, and concluded on November 4, 2016.[3]

Bryan Independent School District is located in Brazos County, Texas. The county seat of Brazos County is Bryan. Brazos County was home to 215,037 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the 71st-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 15,741 students.[7]
Demographics
Brazos County outperformed the state of Texas in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 38.3 percent of Brazos County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.1 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in Brazos County was $39,060, compared to $52,576 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Brazos County was 26.4 percent, compared to 15.9 percent for the entire state.[6]
