Earl F. 'Buddy' Hance is the former Maryland Secretary of Agriculture. He served in this position from May 14, 2009, to December 23, 2014.[1][2]

A fourth-generation Maryland farmer, Hance has always been involved with agriculture. Previously growing tobacco, Hance and his family now produce corn and soybeans. He has served in a number of agriculture-related organizations, including service as president of the Maryland Farm Bureau, chairman of the Maryland State Tobacco Authority and chairman of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Commission. In February 2007, Hance became deputy secretary of agriculture and served in this role until May 2009 when he was appointed Secretary of Agriculture.[3]

Hance served in office from May 19, 2009, until he was replaced by Joe Bartenfelder on December 23, 2014.[2]

Hance was appointed as Maryland Secretary of Agriculture by Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) on April 28, 2009. O'Malley stated, "Buddy is highly respected in both the environmental and agricultural communities and I am confident that he will continue the work that Secretary Richardson has done to build our vision for a smarter, greener, more sustainable State, while protecting our family owned farms, and Maryland’s rich agricultural heritage.”[1]
