Three seats on the Burke County Schools Board of Education were up for election on November 5, 2013. Buddy Armour won the Central district seat while Sam Wilkinson and Catherine Redman Thomas ran unopposed for the Eastern and Western district seats.

Burke County Schools is located in Morganton, North Carolina and is the district for Burke County. Burke County has population of 90,912.[1]
Demographics
As of 2013, the county underperformed the state averages in education and median household income. According to the 2010 Census, the percentage of residents with a high school degree (75.9%) was lower than the state of North Carolina (84.1%) and the percentage of residents over 25 with a bachelor's degree or higher was higher in Burke County (15.6%) compared to the state overall (26.5%). The median household income in Burke County was $37,440 compared to North Carolina's statewide median of $46,291.[1]

Method of board member selection
The Burke County Schools Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. All members of the board are elected by district. Three seats were up for election on November 5, 2013 and the remaining four seats were up for election in November 3, 2015.
