Business group issues wish list for 2011 Kansas Legislative session
January 10, 2011
TOPEKA, Kansas: A business group has offered a wish list for Kansas lawmakers to consider this year, as the Legislature is already in session for 2011. The group, Kansas Economic Progress Council, issued the list in hopes of persuading lawmakers to close the $500 million budget deficit without raising state taxes or accepting new federal stimulus funding.
Among the items in the wish list is an urge to oppose the initiative and referendum system, which, according to the group, is often used to produce anti-business ballot questions in other states. The initiative and referendum process is currently used in 26 states in the nation. According to Ballotpedia's analysis of 2010 ballot measures, a total of 50 initiatives made it to a statewide ballot, with 23 approved and 27 rejected.[1]
