Cal Johnson

Cal Johnson represented Trustee Area 1 on the Fresno Unified School District Board of Education in California. He was first elected to the board in November 2006.[1] Johnson did not file to run for re-election in 2018.
Biography
Johnson grew up in Fresno and attended school in the Fresno Unified School District. He earned his bachelor's degree in social work and his master's degree in rehabilitative counseling from California State University at Fresno. Johnson has worked as an administrator for the State Center Community College District and as a substance abuse counselor.[2]
Elections
2014
Four seats on the Fresno Unified School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. In the Trustee Area 1 race, incumbent Cal Johnson faced three challengers, Debbie J. Darden, Christiansen L. Flemming and Charles Watkins "Muhammad", and won his bid for re-election. Trustee Area 3 incumbent Valerie Florentino Davis ran against one challenger, Esmeralda Diaz. Davis also won her bid for re-election. In Trustee Area 4, incumbent Christopher de la Cerda ran unopposed and won re-election by default. No incumbents filed to run for the Trustee Area 7 seat, leaving the race to candidates Brooke Ashjian and Ruben V. Martinez. Ashjian defeated Martinez to win a seat on the board.

Funding
Johnson reported $3,570.00 in contributions and $1,281.84 in expenditures to the Fresno County Registrar of Voters as of October 18, 2014. In addition to his reported existing balance of $1,201.39, that left his campaign with $3,489.55 cash on hand at that time.[3]
Endorsements
Johnson received endorsements from Fresno Unified Board of Education members Luis Chavez and Christopher de la Cerda.[4]

Johnson highlighted the following accomplishments on his campaign website:
“ | New Rutherford B. Gaston Middle School
Cal Johnson led the way for the construction of Gaston Middle School in West Fresno. For the first time in over 35 years our kids will have the same after school tutoring and activities that other neighborhood middle schools provide. Gaston Middle School has also replaced the “U” neighborhood, a long time magnate for crime.
Vang Pao is the first Fresno elementary school to honor a Hmong American, long advocated for by Cal Johnson. Vang Pao helps relieve overcrowding at Winchell and Calwa Elementary Schools. This new school will provide Southeast families with a new state of the art facility for decades to come.
A new building has been built at Edison High School to replace dilapidated and portable buildings. New construction has also taken place at Fresno and Roosevelt High Schools, Sequoia Middle School and projects are planned for Columbia and King Elementary Schools.
