Cal Mukumoto the Democratic and Working Families Party candidate running for Oregon House of Representatives, District 9. His father was a purple heart veteran and he and his mother brought him up with a strong sense of service. Cal is a forestry expert, he has dedicated his career to strengthening the industries that sustain the South Coast. He currently serves as the chair of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission, helping to improve recreation trails, rivers, ocean shores, and scenic byways. He also previously served as a board member on the Oregon State Board of Forestry, implementing policies and programs for sustainable management of Oregon's public and private forests

Thirty years ago, Cal helped to establish a log merchandising and sales program for an Oregon mill- boosting local business. Since then, Cal has used that same innovative approach to help Oregon businesses throughout the state to save and create jobs and expand local industries. As State Representative, Cal will help small businesses recover from economic hardship, support strong schools, expand job skills training, and lower healthcare costs. While many in Salem prioritize Portland, Cal will be a strong voice for the coast.

  • Helping Small Businesses and Supporting Working Families: Cal understands the vital role small businesses play in our communities, creating critical jobs in a strained economy. He will support workers by ensuring access to unemployment benefits and paid sick leave. As our State Representative, Cal will grow jobs by supporting small businesses and investing in jobs skills training so every Oregonian can earn a decent living.
  • Educating Our Future: As a father, Cal has seen the impact of decades of disinvestment in our schools firsthand. And as a businessman, Cal knows that strong schools are the key to a strong economy and he supports the Student Success act and will work to protect that vital funding. To strengthen our schools, Cal will fight to reduce class sizes, improve graduation rates, and expand job training and apprenticeship programs, like those at Southwestern Oregon Community College, so more young people can get the skills they need to earn a good living.
  • Protecting Our Healthcare Cal knows that healthcare and prescription drugs cost too much for many Oregonians, especially seniors. He'll work to improve access to affordable care in our community, keep rural hospitals open, and invest more resources into mental health and addiction care. Cal believes Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege and Cal will stand up to politicians who would roll back healthcare access, like pre-existing conditions.
Honoring our Veterans

The son of a World War II Purple Heart recipient, Cal will always make sure our veterans get the care and services they earned. He'll work to improve healthcare access for veterans and do everything he can to help end the veteran homelessness crisis.

Caring For Our Seniors
Cal will fight to make sure long-term care facilities in our community have strong health and safety protections, and that caregivers have quality wages, benefits, and training so that our seniors get the care they deserve.

Revitilizing our Economy:

As an experienced businessman, Cal Mukumoto knows how to grow our local economy because he's done it. From helping to establish a log sales program for an Oregon mill to working closely with local tribes to weather rocky economic times, Cal has been fighting to protect and invest in our communities for decades. He believes in economic growth that is socially responsible, environmentally safe, and economically sustainable.
As a teenager, I was a Retail Clerks Union member.  I saw early on that worker-led Unions and Collective Bargaining are good -for not only the employee and the organization but they help to lift up entire communities.  I learned first-hand that Unions are essential to growing the middle class and I am a strong supporter of employee rights for everyone.
This crisis has brought economic instability to many families & small businesses in our region. Cal wants things to go back to normal as soon as possible so that our community can stay healthy and our economic recovery can be sustainable but he knows building back after this recession will not be simple. He will listen to the guidance of medical experts & public health officials. Cal believes the legislature should consider emergency investments to stabilize the economy, support workers & small businesses, especially in communities like ours that have been hit hard. As we recover from the pandemic Cal will make sure coastal families don't get left behind.
If elected, Cal would like to serve on the Natural Resources and/or the Economic Development Committee. His expertise and talent fit best with the goals of these groups and that is where he believes he would be most impactful.
