The Children's Health Insurance and Youth Smoking Initiative (08-0006) was proposed as an initiative for the November 2008 ballot in California. The measure would have imposed an additional sales tax of 75 cents on a pack of cigarettes. On April 1, the California Secretary of State announced that the measure was eligible for petition circulation. Supporters would have needed to collect 694,354 signatures of registered voters by late June to qualify the measure for the November ballot.[1]
However, the California Secretary of State announced on May 2, 2008 that the measure's supporters had withdrawn it.[2]
Analysts at California's Legislative Analyst's Office estimate that the new tax would raise about $750 million annually.
