California Judicial Council to consider new fees in trial courts

California: Amid the lingering controversy over the Administrative Office of the Courts and Alliance of California Judges, the Judicial Council is discussing how to ease the budget burden for the trial courts. Last week, it considered a new statewide fees to reduce the sting of the $350 million budget reduction. Ultimately, the council did not agree with amending Rule 10.815, which authorizes trial courts to establish a fee for attorneys in complex civil cases. By a 16-1 vote, it did agree that the California Legislature was able to enact the fee via statute.[1]
