Two versions of a California Repeal of Senate Bill 48 (#11-0083, #11-0085) were approved for circulation in California as contenders for the November 6, 2012 ballot.
Their sponsors, however, did not submit any signatures to election officials by the deadline.
If either version had qualified for the ballot and been approved by voters, they would have:
- Repealed the requirement established in State Senate Bill 48, which was enacted in 2011, that schools prohibit instructional materials that reflect adversely on persons based on their sexual orientation and other characteristics.
- Repealed SB 48's requirement that school instructional materials recognize societal contributions of various groups to the economic, political, and social development of California and the United States.
One version (#11-0083) was filed by Louis Sheldon. He called his initiative "The Bipartisan Initiative to Restore Local School Board Control Act." The other version (#11-0085) was filed by Richard Rios. He called his version "Repeal SB48."
Other efforts were made in 2011 and 2012 to repeal California SB 48. A Referendum on SB 48 did not receive enough signatures as a veto referendum to qualify for the ballot.
