Mission

Californians Against Fracking has the following mission statement:

Fracking poses a direct and immediate threat to the drinking water, air, food, health, wildlife, climate and economy of California. While our state prides itself on being a leader in the fight against climate change, oil companies gear up to frack the estimated 15 billion barrels of oil in the Monterey Shale. The area is home to some of the state’s most productive farmland, critical water sources, important wildlife habitat and communities from the Salinas Valley to the Los Angeles Basin. Californians Against Fracking has come together to call for a ban in California on this dirty and dangerous practice.[1][2]

History and work

Californians Against Fracking was organized in May 2013 by a group of organizations opposed to fracking in California, including CREDO, Food and Water Watch, the Center for Biological Diversity, Environment California and Democracy for America.[1][3] The diverse coalition includes nearly 200 environmental organizations, businesses, faith leaders, health advocates, labor organizations, food producers and citizen groups. [4]

The coalition has helped organize marches and rallies across the state in support of a fracking ban.[5] In addition, Californians Against Fracking has presented Governor Jerry Brown with signed petitions and hosted screenings of the anti-fracking movies Gasland and Gasland II.[3] The organization also produced Faith Against Fracking, a film featuring leaders of the faith community expressing their opposition to fracking.[6]

Leadership

Californians Against Fracking does not have an organized leadership structure, but lists the following individuals as contacts:

  • Patrick Sullivan (Center for Biological Diversity)
  • Adam Scow (Food & Water Watch)
  • Dan Jacobson (Environment California)
  • Madeline Stano (Center on Race, Poverty & the Environment)[7]

Finances

Californians Against Fracking is a nonprofit coalition, not a registered 501(c) organization subject to financial disclosure. The coalition has received financial staffing support from the Chorus Foundation via Catskill Mountainkeeper Inc., a New York-based organization opposed to fracking.[8]
