I have had a passion for serving others since grade school. I volunteered at my church, raised money for school sports and campaigned for state and national candidates.

I joined the Air Force JROTC program at Salem High School, serving all four years and was class president in 2005. That same year, I represented New Hampshire at the National Youth Leadership Forum. I'm a member of the Knights of Columbus, the VFW and the American Legion. Running for State Representative in Salem is a natural and logical step for me to take to continue to support and serve my community. I graduated cum laude from UMass-Lowell with a BA in Political Science and a double minor in history and legal studies. I was inducted into the SALUTE Veterans National Honor Society. Middlesex Community College invited me to speak at its Law Day ceremony, and I received an honorary degree from the college at that event. I have served in the US Navy SEABEES since 2013 and was deployed to Africa, receiving multiple awards during my tour, most notably the Air Force Achievement Medal.

I recently graduated with a doctorate from New England Law-Boston. While there, I helped establish the school's Veterans Advocacy Society, serving as treasurer before my deployment. Soon, I will complete work on an advanced degree in Public International Law from Leiden University specializing in Peace, Justice and Development.

Candidate Connection

Cam Iannalfo completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Iannalfo's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

The economy; keeping a balanced budget; protecting workers

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Public policy overall has been a passion of mine but if I need to narrow it down it would be international relations/law. The world is becoming more interconnected than ever and I believe keeping this an important priority is essential.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

To lead by example and to try and understand the concerns of all their constituents.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I enjoy serving and have tried to do so my entire life. I've been volunteering since I was a child. I've gone to school to understand what policy and law works for people. I am a veteran currently serving in the Navy Seabees. This is a great opportunity to continue serving on a greater scale.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To understand and serve all people.

What legacy would you like to leave?

That I contributed in leaving the world a better place than it was.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The first historical event I can remember clearly was the Oklahoma City Bombing, it was just terrible. I was 6 years old.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Worked at Demoulas collecting carriages and bagging groceries. It lasted a few months until I started working at Dunkin' Donuts.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Putting myself through college and law school has been difficult from a financial standpoint.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

It would certainly help with understanding procedure and the law.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Revenue

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Yes, this is the essence of teamwork. When it comes down to it we are all there to work for the people.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

We need to eliminate gerrymandering nationwide.

Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

John McCain comes to mind with his recent passing. Although I didn't agree with him on a lot of issues I admire how he conducted himself both as a legislator and as someone who was the definition of a public servant.

Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

Yes, particularly the struggles some families have in taking care of children with special needs. We need to make sure we are supportive of these children and their families.
