An effort to recall Cameron Cavitt, a member of the Republican Party, from his elected position representing District 106 in the Michigan House of Representatives was launched on July 13, 2023.
The Michigan Board of State Canvassers met on August 1, 2023, to hold a clarity and factual hearing on the recall's petition language. The board approved the petition for circulation. The recall petition was valid for 180 days—or no later than January 28, 2024. This date would have changed if the recall was appealed to the state Court of Appeals. Supporters had to collect around 12,000 signatures in the district within a 60-day period to require a recall election.[1] The required signatures were not submitted to recall Cavitt.
Proponents of the recall effort criticized Cavitt over his yes vote to elect Joseph Tate (D) as House speaker.[2][3]
Cavitt was elected to the state House in 2022. He defeated Marie Fielder (D) in the general election with 65% of the vote.
Recall supporters
Gary Wnuk filed the recall petition against Cavitt on July 13, 2023. According to Michigan Advance, the reason cited in the recall petition is Cavitt's yes vote to elect state Rep. Joe Tate (D) as speaker for the 2023-2024 legislative session.[4]
Recall opponents
In an emailed statement, Cavitt called the recall efforts "partisan tactics aimed at serving the interests of one political faction." He also said, "I was elected to Lansing to fight for fiscal responsibility – taxpayers should not be on the hook for a meaningless recall effort. Let us refocus our energy and efforts on the challenges that lie ahead, working towards a brighter future for all Michiganders. I remain highly committed to serving the best interests of my constituents."[4]
