Cameron Moquin was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He earned a bachelor's degree from Rhode Island College in 2012. Moquin's career experience includes working as a fire/rescue lieutenant with the Providence Fire Department.^[1]

Cameron is a Husband of 8 years, proud father of a kind, strong and agile 5 year old boy and firefighter 9 years, currently assigned to Providence Rescue 5 as Lieutenant. Graduate of Rhode Island College with degrees in Psychology and Political Science . Member of Pi Sigma Alpha. Loves his family, his job, running, bicycling, backpacking, camping, mountaineering, and home brewing.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Unions are the backbone of this country raising wages, benefits and working conditions for members and raising the prevailing wages for everyone else.
The State of Rhode Island's coasts and green spaces need to be protected and prepared for climate change.
Rhode Island's medical fragmented medical system repaired to lower costs and improve access and continuity of care.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

We can and should do more to improve the lives of all Rhode Islanders.

We need a step-down from 911 which gives access to urgent and non-emergent medical care. You should care about this, because the status quo raises your health costs and wait times in the emergency room. When uninsured, underinsured and others use the emergency room as a first line of medical care for lack of access or knowledge, it burdens the entire chain of Emergency Medical Services and the financial burden is carried by you, in higher health insurance costs and hospital bills.

Another main issue I stand for is the humanitarian crisis of Homelessness in the state of RI. Deinstitutionalization has had its upsides, obviously. However it was no catch all, and when John F. Kennedy signed legislation that would have provided stable funding to and construction of community mental health care facilities and group homes, he did not have the opportunity to ensure the legislation was enforced, and sadly today so many people who should have no expectation of self care due to psychological and developmental disability have been failed by the so-called "system" and are left out in the cold. These folks understandably have few other options than to call for Emergency Medical Services and land in a hospital where they can be warm and eat at least an occasional sandwich, but this medical system was not built to manage that often heavy burden.

I have a 6 point plan to alleviate many of these problems.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to Tom Waits because of his independence and creativity and obviously his music, but also this perception I have of him as being this beatnik philosopher of high moral character.

I'd like to follow the example of Sir Edmund Hillary, a beekeeper from New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepalese and Indian descent who together were the first to summit Mount Everest and did so as non-British members of the British Climbing expedition. It is likely that Mr. Norgay was the first to summit and Hillary came up behind him after taking the only summit photo, featuring Tenzing at the Top. I admire them both as expert mountaineers at the cutting edge of their sport and also their humility and industrious nature which above all allowed them to persevere.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity, honesty, and humility are probably what I would consider most important. Any quality or trait that lends itself to 'realness'.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

The effects of decisions made by elected officials can and do have lasting impacts on people's for better or for worse. It is vitally important that due diligence and deliberation is performed in any given policymaking choice.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

What's the first one I remember, or what is the first to come to mind? There were a number of things in the early 90's like the fall of the Berlin wall which I recall my grandmother explaining, then there was the LA riots and Rodney King -- I remember feeling so perplexed by that because I couldn't understand how something like that could happen in the United States, and here we are. I remember the Shoemaker-Levy-9 comet which struck Jupiter spectacularly, and Kurt Cobain's apparent suicide-- I didn't actually know who he was at the time, but I did know my mom did not like his music.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I worked at Three Point in Camp Yawgoog for 9 non-consecutive amazing and formative summers.

What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?

The U.S. House of Representatives with a membership of 435 people represents its constituents by serving 2-year terms, meaning it is more sensitive and likely to change in its ideological make-up depending recent current and future events or circumstances. The US House is closer to the heartbeat of the nation and therefore, ideally should be the most responsive to the needs of its constituents. Also, having the power of the purse it is an important check on the executive branch. In terms of policymaking, any effort to develop social, economic, and health equity must start in the House.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

It certainly can't hurt to have prior experience in government or politics, but the experience may also serve to isolate a person from the realities on the street, depending when and how a person entered the political arena.

What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

As a country our greatest and most necessary test will be healing the wounds inflicted by divisive and ideologically centered politics. We should be focusing on good policy with the goal making the country better. We should be lifting each other up. We should be listening to people we are diametrically opposed to in order to find the common ground that will provide a pathway forward and move toward a greater state of maturity as a country. We cannot all agree. This is obvious, but there is a central truth to every argument and the stage must be set for thoughtful, meaningful conversation. This will not come easily and will not come quickly, but we need to walk toward it. We need to try, because owe it to ourselves and we owe it to our children.

If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

It would be advantageous to the causes I support to make my way onto the Ways and Means committee, Science space and Technology, Appropriations, Natural Resources, and Energy and Commerce, and Small Business.

Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?

It's written that way for a reason as part of a bicameral institution. The Senate acts as a stabilizing factor and the House acts as a way to push for change-- this is how the sentiments of the country are reflected. The job of the Representative is to hear what their constituents says and act upon it. The Senate being the more deliberative body is protected to some extend by the length of its term. The 2-year term of a representative must keep them on their toes as the tides of change lap onto their shores much more frequently.

What are your thoughts on term limits?

Term limits have upsides but mostly downsides, I think. I can see the logic in wanting them, I can also see the benefit of experience in producing valuable legislation and policy. Many good laws may never see the light of day without long term members of the House and Senate being there to push them and develop the complexities and nuance that makes these things happen. I am still open to exploring term limits but at this point I oppose them.

Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

Every day I go to work I meet someone new with a heartbreaking story. The people and situations may differ, but the common thread is the same. The American Healthcare system so fragmented and disconnected that many people are just left in the dust.

Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?

Compromise is desirable but in today's political climate appears to be out of reach. This is something we need to change. In order to reach consensus across party lines we have a lot of growing and healing to do first. Until that time, if policymaking has no other path forward, we should at least draft policy that in more reasonable times would be considered acceptable to a rational person.

The Constitution says that all bills for raising revenue must originate in the House. What role would this power play in your priorities if elected?

This power would be central to the priorities of my platform. John F Kennedy signed the Community Mental Health Act into law in 1963 and was never able to see it through. Later, Deinstitutionalization continued without the actual funding or facilities to replace the role of the larger and wildly unpopular mental health institutions that were closing down. As a result, many people slipped through the very large cracks in this transition, and little has been done since that time to correct the lack of funding promised by Kennedy's Community Mental Health Act. The Excellence in Mental health act was a great step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to truly address the problem. The power to raise revenue and to creatively find revenue will be instrumental in pursuing this goal.
