In Georgia, there is one primary agency involved in statewide campaign finance regulation: the Georgia Ethics Commission. The commission was previously called The Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission. Georgia House Bill 572 renamed the agency, effective July 1, 2023.[1]

Authority

The commission oversees campaign finance reporting processes for state-level candidates and political committees. The commission, which is also charged with enforcing Georgia's campaign finance laws, can impose civil penalties against individuals and entities that violate the law.[1]

Organization

The commission comprises five members. Three of these members are appointed by the governor. Of these three, no more than two can belong to the same political party. In addition, two of these three members serve three-year terms. The remaining gubernatorial appointee serves a two-year term. One member is appointed by the Senate Committee on Assignments. The fifth member is appointed by the speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives. Legislative appointees serve four-year terms. Commissioners cannot serve more than one term. In addition, state law "provides that any person who has qualified to run for office or has held any federal, state, or local public office within a period of five years prior to appointment is not eligible to serve as a member of the Commission."[2]
