As a mother, educator, and attorney, I believe education is the greatest equalizer. I have over 18 years of experience that includes:

1) community inclusive policy making; 2) diversity, equity, and inclusion training/development; 3) civil litigation; 4) teacher insight; and 5) wellness instructor/advocate.

I can bring a unique perspective to the Board as a former teacher of Atlanta Public Schools, former DeKalb District employee, and practicing attorney. More importantly, I understand the role of Board Members which is centered on three areas: policy making, fiscal oversight, and accountability.
  • I am running because of my personal experience in finding my children the right educational fit drove me to seek a seat at the table to have a voice for all. In 2015, my son began sixth grade at a middle school on the East side of DeKalb with very low performance. My son would come home almost daily crying because there was a fight at school. He could not focus in the chaotic environment. In a matter of months, I had to make a change and moved to the north side of DeKalb. The change was like night and day. The academic rigor was unparalleled, the aura of high expectations danced through the halls of the schools from the teachers/staff, and the school was rich with diversity. It took us moving to a more affluent zip code for my son to have a
  • I am running because I know that nothing happens overnight and that change happens incrementally. When I taught first and second grade in Atlanta Public Schools in a housing community, my students were labeled as ‘less than’ and unable to learn because of their environment. Every day in my classroom, I saw my scholars as the future and poured all I could into them--never treating them as something other than great. We have to see all students as capable and cultivate their genius. We can work together to change the expectation in our District that no matter where you come from--you can achieve anything.
  • I am running in District #2 because its time. I have honed my legal skills as a practitioner in the areas of education and civil rights law. It’s time for me to step up, express the bold ideas I have for change, and push the status quo. We are One DeKalb, We are Diverse, and we will continue to educate all our students at the highest level. With your help we can do much more for our students. I ask that you stand with me and vote for Candice D. McKinley for Dekalb County School Board, District #2 on May 24, 2022.
School Safety and Well-Being

Our schools in District #2 need immediate attention to ensure they are safe places for our students. The attention must be on both operational upgrades and intentionality to social and emotional supports inside our schools. When our students come into spaces that are not safe and do not feel safe due to wellness challenges from COVID-19, other mental health issues, or ineffective discipline policies --there is a dire problem. We must act now. Safety and well-being is essential and just as important to our staff who have spent the last two years on the front lines of an education revolution.
Financial accountability, policy making, and hiring of the superintendant.
Families, students, and teachers/staff.
Diversity is our greatest strength. In District 2, we are a metropolis of culture and heritage. Specifically, the International Community School (“ICS’) supports a student body of fifty percent or more immigrant student population and the Cross Keys cluster includes one of highest levels of Latinx student population in the District. It’s imperative to recognize and include communities of color that are doing the work necessary to see academic results for their students.
