Chafin is a graduate from Marshall University who also received a law degree from West Virginia University. Chafin cited her experience as president of the board as a primary reason for her candidacy, saying, "As president of the West Virginia State Bar, we got to work closely with some justices of the Supreme Court and I really got to see how the court works and a lot of the things that the court can do for the citizens of West Virginia.
