Two seats were up for election on the Canton Board of Education. Incumbent Richard S. Milligan ran unopposed and won the District 1 seat, while John M. Rinaldi defeated Eric Resnick for the at-large seat.
About the district
Canton is the county seat of Stark County and located in northeastern Ohio. The city's population is 73,007 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[1]
Demographics
Canton underperformed compared to the rest of Ohio in terms of higher education achievement, median income and poverty rate. The 2010 U.S. Census found that 13% of Canton residents over 25 years old held undergraduate degrees compared to a 24.5% rate for the state of Ohio. Canton had a median income of $30,264 in 2010 compared to $48,071 for Ohio. The poverty rate for Canton was 28.8% in 2010 compared to an 14.8% rate for the rest of the state.[1]

Method of board member selection
The Canton Board of Education consists of five members who are elected to four-year terms. Two members of the board are elected by district and three members are considered at-large. There was no primary election on September 10, 2013 and the general election was held on November 5, 2013. Two seats on the board were up for election in 2013 and three seats were on the ballot on November 3, 2015.[3]
Candidates for the Canton Board of Education must be 18 years old, a resident of the district and not hold city office concurrent to board service. The Stark County Board of Elections required a $30 filing fee as well as at least 25 signatures by the filing deadline on August 7, 2013.[3]

What was at stake?
Incumbent Richard S. Milligan ran for re-election without opposition for the District 1 seat. Former board members Eric Resnick and John M. Rinaldi sought an at-large seat previously held by board president Nadine McIlwain, who did not file for re-election.

Additional elections on the ballot
The Canton City Schools elections shared the ballot with other local races. Residents of Canton chose three at-large members and the president of the City Council.[7] The municipal ballot also featured the city treasurer race and two seats on the Canton Municipal Court. Voters also decided on four municipal issues that would increase city council terms from two to four years and increase millage rates to benefit local parks.[8]
